Mint Chocolate Oat Balls

Delicious, mint chocolate flavored bites that will have you delighting in the Christmas season 

Snack or dessert??? You tell me. I’m pretty sure it could go both ways, especially during the holidays because tis the season! so we’re going to go with snack.

It’s officially December which means people can no longer complain about me listening to Christmas music “too early” and you have no idea how pumped I am about it. I love Christmas for so many reasons. And because of this, I usually get very crafty around this season. I love baking/cooking and gifting the things I make to others as well as doing every cheesy DIY on Pinterest I can find. Christmas is filled with sweets treats so I like to make something of my own that I enjoy. This recipe has less sugar than most Christmas treats and is unique compared to the classic cookies and pies (although I love me some of those too). It’s always good to have a variety. 

This recipe is easy and quick to throw together making it perfect to make for a Christmas party, family and friends gathering, or for someone as a gift. Because they’re so quick, you can also make multiple batches for a large group or to give away (trust me, the mail carriers love it!)

If you are gluten free or making these for someone who is, make sure to use gluten free oats. Although oats themselves don’t contain gluten, they’re often made in factories with gluten which can result in cross contamination. Also, if you or someone you’re making these for is dairy free, make sure to buy dairy free chocolate.

  • 2 cups oats

  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder

  • 1/4 cup coconut oil

  • 1/4 cup maple syrup

  • 2 oz chocolate (I used 55%)

  • 3 candy canes (or 4-6 peppermints)

  • 1/2 tsp vanilla

  • optional: 2-4 oz extra chocolate for coating + peppermints to roll in


  1. Crush candy canes or peppermints into small pieces or powder (I place them in a ziplock bad and hit them with a mallet)

  2. Add crushed candy canes, oats, and cocoa powder to a food processor or high powered blender and blend for approx 1 minute

  3. Heat baking chocolate and coconut oil together in the microwave (20 second intervals) or over the stove

  4. Once melted, add chocolate and oil to the oat mixture as well as the maple syrup and vanilla

  5. Blend for approx 1 minute, gradually increasing speed. Batter should become thick and clump together 

  6. Form batter into desired sized balls (if batter is slightly crumbly, squeeze each portion before forming into a ball)

  7. Place balls on baking sheet covered with parchment paper or foil and place in the freezer for 10 minutes 

  8. Optional: melt 2-4 oz of baking chocolate in microwave or over stove and coat balls (I use toothpicks to limit messiness), then roll balls in crushes candy canes or peppermint

Refrigerate for up to one week

or freeze for up to 3 months
